The shadow is not your evil twin. The shadow is the inventory of everything you disowned to stay loved: your anger, your envy, your ugliest honest want.
You do not kill it and you do not feed it. You stop spending yourself to keep it hidden and let it return under its own name.
Below are thirty-two figures the shadow takes. The inventory runs hot to cold. Hot is material that discharges outward, where it is at least visible. Cold is material that never surfaces at all — and what never surfaces cannot be worked with.
Nothing here is a diagnosis and nothing here requires curing. Jung's instruction was to make it conscious. Hillman's was to stay with the figure long enough to hear what it wants.
